Stack Your Way to a Stronger Real Estate Brokerage

Habit Stacking for Talent Attraction and Retention

I’ve worked with leaders at 500 of the nation’s largest real estate firms, and I’ve found one universal truth: every broker-owner and their staff knows what they should be doing. Call five agents a day. Check in with top producers. Follow up with the recruit who said “maybe next quarter.”

Knowing isn’t the problem. Doing it when the day gets loud is.

That’s where habit stacking comes in.

What Habit Stacking Is

James Clear popularized the idea in Atomic Habits. Instead of building a new habit from scratch, you attach it to one you already do every day. The formula is simple:

After I [current habit], I will [new habit].

You already have dozens of anchors in your day: the first cup of coffee, opening your laptop, walking out of the sales meeting, getting in the car. Each one is a hook you can hang a recruiting or retention habit on.

I’ve written that habits start as a thin thread and become a strong cable. Habit stacking is how you tie the first knot.

Stacks for Talent Attraction

  • After I pour my morning coffee, I’ll send one personal text to an agent I’d love to have on the team. Not a pitch. A congratulations on a listing, a closing, or a milestone.
  • After I review the MLS hot sheet, I’ll note two agents whose names keep showing up on new listings and add them to my call list.
  • After I finish a recruiting appointment, I’ll schedule the follow-up before I leave the room.

Stacks for Talent Retention

  • After I lead the sales meeting, I’ll pull one agent aside and ask, “How’s business, really?”
  • After I approve a commission check, I’ll send that agent a two-line thank-you.
  • After I close out Friday, I’ll look at who I haven’t talked to this week and put them first on Monday’s list.

Retention isn’t a program. It’s a hundred small moments of attention. Stacking makes sure those moments happen on purpose, not by accident. Last week I wrote that we aren’t meant to do this alone. Stacking is how you make connection automatic.

Why It Works When the Market Doesn’t

Markets reset. Your habits don’t. That’s the heart of The Score Doesn’t Transfer. Your Habits Do. The broker who stacked recruiting calls onto the morning coffee in a slow year recruits well in any market.

And in The Three Habits That Set the Best Apart, the first key was starting quickly. Habit stacking lowers the bar to start. You aren’t finding new time. You’re using time you already have.

How to Build Your First Stack

  1. List Your Anchors: Write down five things you do every workday without fail.
  2. Pick Two Habits: One for attraction, one for retention. Small enough that you can’t talk yourself out of them.
  3. Write the Sentence: “After I ___, I will ___.” Put it where you’ll see it.
  4. Track It for 30 Days: A simple check mark on the calendar. Don’t break the chain.
  5. Stack the Next One: Once it’s automatic, add another link.

Thin threads become strong cables. One stack at a time.

Win the day!
