Horace Mann, the education reformer, put it this way: “Habit is a cable; we weave a thread of it each day, and at last we cannot break it.”
I think about that line a lot. Not because it’s clever, but because it’s true in every brokerage I’ve ever worked with.
One thread doesn’t hold much
One prospecting call won’t change your year. One coffee with a recruit won’t fill your office. One check-in with a top producer won’t keep them from leaving.
That’s exactly why most people stop. A single thread feels like it doesn’t matter. So they skip it today and plan to make it up tomorrow.
But the cable never gets built in a day. It gets built in the days you didn’t feel like it and did it anyway.
The cable works both ways
Here’s the part people forget. Bad habits are cables too.
The manager who stops checking in with agents for a month hasn’t made one bad decision. They’ve woven thirty threads of distance. The agent who lets follow-up slide one more day is building a habit of letting things slide. By the time anyone notices, it’s hard to break.
So the question isn’t whether you have habits. You do. The question is which cable you’re building.
Pick your threads on purpose
For broker-owners and managers:
- One real conversation with an agent every day. Not a meeting. A conversation.
- One recruiting touch every day, even if it’s just a congratulations text.
- Ten minutes at the end of the day to write down what worked.
For agents:
- Five contacts before you open your email.
- One handwritten note a day to a past client.
- Your calendar set the night before, so the morning starts with a plan.
For students:
- Study a little every day instead of a lot on the weekend. That’s the same habit that will run your business.
Make the thread easy to pick up
The best habits are attached to something you already do. Calls after your first cup of coffee. A recruiting text every time you get in the car. A note to a past client every time you close a file.
You’re not looking for more willpower. You’re looking for fewer decisions.
Win the day, one thread at a time
You won’t feel the cable getting stronger. You’ll just notice, a year from now, that the things that used to be hard are now automatic. That’s when you’ll know it’s working.
What’s one thread you’ll add tomorrow?
