Read the conditions. Steady the helm. Keep the crew together.

Same job on the water as in a brokerage: read the conditions, steady the helm, keep the crew together.
Several times a month you’ll find me on the water off the Southern California coast, sailing with my sail share club. Every time out, the job is the same: see what the wind and water are actually doing, make small corrections early, and make sure everyone on board knows their role.

It’s the same job I’ve done in real estate since 2000, as a broker, as CEO of a national brand, and now helping broker-owners recruit, develop and keep great agents. Markets shift. Agents come and go. The leaders who win are the ones who stay steady at the helm and win the day, every day.

Who this is for

Winning the Day is for broker-owners, managers, recruiters, team leaders, agents, and the students who will lead our industry next. The goal is simple: better leadership, stronger brokerages, more productive agents. New here? Start Here is the best first stop.

The track record behind the advice

As CEO of the nation’s 35th largest brokerage firm, I led the company to five consecutive Inc. 5000 appearances, nearly 5x revenue growth, $8B in annual sales, 24,000 transactions and 4,000 associates. Today, through Recruiting Insight, I work with leaders who are ready to grow their companies through better recruiting, selection and retention. That track record isn’t a credential. It’s the playbook I bring to every engagement.

What I believe

Recruiting is an act of leadership. This is the core of everything I teach. The brokerage model is not the differentiator. Execution is. The leaders who win master the internal game first, then win and keep the right agents every day. That’s TRIBE, the Recruiting Insight framework: Think, Research, Influence, Block and Embrace. My coaching puts it to work in 90 Days to Recruiting Success.

Agents move for more than money. When agents change brokerages, compensation is rarely the first reason. Direction, development and the leader they work for usually come first. That’s the idea behind The 8 D’s of Agent Movement.

In hard markets, the best firms get closer to their people. RealTrends studied 17 brokerages that grew through the 2006–2009 downturn. Their edge wasn’t a gimmick. It was leadership and daily fundamentals. What 17 Brokerages Taught Us

Action produces data. You learn what works in recruiting by doing it every day and tracking the results, not by planning the perfect campaign. Action Produces Data. Theory Produces Opinions.

Teaching and writing

I teach real estate at Chapman University’s Hayden School of Real Estate (bachelor’s and master’s levels) and in the South Orange County Community College District, including Mortgage Loan Brokering and Lending at Saddleback College. I’ve written or co-written six textbooks used in California Community Colleges: California Real Estate Principles, California Real Estate Practice, California Real Estate Finance, California Property Management, Introduction to Real Estate Economics and Mortgage Loan Origination. I’m also the award-winning author of Up In Your Business. My insights have been featured in the Wall Street Journal, iHeart Radio and other outlets. See where I’ve been featured.

Beyond business

I’m a Desert Storm veteran and former US Army officer, an endurance athlete and a lifelong learner, with an MBA from Cal State and a bachelor’s from Colorado State. Over the years, my agents and staff started repeating the short lines I coach by, and they finally told me to write them down. Those became my Coach Markisms.
