Be hard on the systems and soft on the people

Your Business In One Sentence

Here’s your business in one sentence:

What happens in your business is a result of the things you habitually think and do.

Not the market. Not the brand on the sign. Not the commission split. Those matter, but they’re the conditions you work in. Your results come from your habits inside those conditions.

Habits of thought

Before we act, we think. The agent who believes “nobody is selling right now” makes fewer calls. The broker who believes “good agents don’t move” stops recruiting. The leader who believes “my people know what to do” stops coaching. Each belief feels like an observation, but it works like an instruction.

Change the thought and you change the behavior that follows it. “Nobody is selling” becomes “the sellers who need to move need an agent who knows this market.” That thought picks up the phone.

Habits of action

Most of what happens in a day isn’t decided. It’s repeated. The first hour, how we respond to email, whether we prospect before or after lunch, whether we follow up or let it slide: these patterns run on autopilot. Over a year, they add up to the business we have.

That’s good news. If your results come from your habits, then you don’t need a new market or a new brand to get new results. You need new habits.

Be hard on the systems and soft on the people

When results fall short, the instinct is to blame people, including ourselves. A better question is: what system produced this result? Was the habit missing, unclear or unsupported? Leaders who fix the system get lasting change. Leaders who only push the person get a short burst and a frustrated team. I wrote more about this in Stop Chasing the Goal. Start Honing the System.

Try this

  1. Write down the one result you most want to change in the next 90 days.
  2. List the daily habits, of thought and action, that are producing your current result.
  3. Pick one habit to replace, and decide what will remind you, track it and hold you accountable.

Change the habit, and the sentence takes care of the rest.
