Preparation cures anxiety, and performance creates opportunity.
Most anxiety in our business comes from uncertainty: not knowing where the next listing will come from, whether a key agent will stay, how the market will treat us next quarter. We can’t control the market. We can control how prepared we are when we walk into it.
Preparation cures anxiety
Think about the last listing appointment you walked into fully prepared: the comps pulled, the pricing story clear, the questions anticipated. You were calm. Now think about one you winged. The difference wasn’t the seller. It was you.
The same holds for a broker-owner heading into a new year. A written plan for recruiting, retention and coaching turns a vague worry (“I hope we grow”) into a set of next steps. Anxiety shrinks when the next step is clear.
Performance creates opportunity
Opportunity rarely shows up out of nowhere. It follows performance. The agent who delivers for one client gets the referral. The leader who keeps their commitments to their agents gets the introductions to the agents worth recruiting. Do the work well, and the work brings more work.
Start by clearing the clutter
Preparation also means making room. Here’s one small habit from my own week: email. If you’re like me, you get so much junk email. You have two options: unsubscribe (three clicks or more) or one click to send it to the permanent junk folder. I pick the one click. About every 90 days, I do a full clean-up and a virtual throw-out.
It sounds minor, but clutter, digital or otherwise, steals attention you need for the work that matters. It’s a small version of “less doing, more living.”
How to prepare for the months ahead
- Look back. What produced your best results this year? What drained time without producing anything?
- Write the plan. Pick three priorities for the next 90 days and the weekly activities that drive each one.
- Clear the deck. Close your open loops, clean up the inbox and cancel what no longer earns its place.
- Rehearse the hard conversations. Role-play the pricing talk, the recruiting call and the retention check-in before they happen.
Prepare well, perform consistently, and the opportunities will follow.
