We’ve all been there. We have a goal, a plan, and the best intentions, but then those five words sneak into our heads:
“I don’t feel like it.”
The truth is, we’re all waiting for that perfect moment, that spark of inspiration, to take action. But you’ll rarely feel 100% ready. You’ll rarely feel like it. And that’s okay.
Feelings follow action, not the other way around
We tend to believe we need to feel motivated before we act. In practice it usually works in reverse. You make the first call, and the second one is easier. You write the first note, and suddenly you’re on a roll. Motivation shows up after you start, not before.
That’s why the best agents and leaders don’t rely on how they feel. They rely on a routine. The calls happen at 9 a.m. whether it’s a great day or a lousy one. The coaching session happens on Tuesday whether the leader feels inspired or not. Routines remove the daily negotiation with yourself.
This week, your mission is to: do it anyway.
- Build the relationships.
- Make the calls.
- Write the notes.
- Launch the campaign.
- Ask for the business.
Action creates insight and momentum.
As General Patton said, “A good plan, executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week.”
Three ways to beat “I don’t feel like it”
- Make the first step tiny. Don’t commit to 20 calls. Commit to dialing the first number. Starting is the hard part.
- Decide in advance. Put the activity on the calendar with a specific time. When the time comes, you’re not deciding whether to do it, just doing it.
- Find a partner. Accountability beats willpower. A call block with a colleague or a quick text to your coach when you start makes it far harder to skip.
